What do honeybees, computer operating systems and software have in common? They all suffer from the same problem. Its a product of our desire for minimal effort with large returns. Today’s industrial agriculture and the computer infrastructure are dominated by a very dangerous monoculture. It makes us vulnerable, lazy, and stagnant.

Linux Goes To War!?

The Navy is going Linux. It was reported that the Navy’s newest, $3.5 billion, high-tech war ship, the USS Zumwalt will be powered by off-the-shelf server hardware, various flavors of Linux, and over 6 million lines of software code. Along with the USS Zumwalt other high tech assets the navy has will also be powered by Linux. Apparently Raytheon has signed a contract worth $15.8 million to upgrade the Navy’s drone control systems to Linux based systems.

I’ve been a Mac addict since 1995 when I started working full time as a graphic artist. I have worked in both a Windows environment and a Mac environment in a professional setting. After over 18 years I have come to the conclusion that I prefer the Mac. I do, however think that mono-cultures are a bad thing.
