When Shopify Comes Up Short

When Shopify Comes Up Short

Let me start by saying — I'm a fan of Shopify. I build and manage Shopify stores for a living, and I recommend the platform to nearly every client I work with. It's powerful, flexible, and genuinely well-built.

That said, no platform is perfect. And sometimes it's the small things that make you scratch your head. You know the saying — the devil is in the details.

So What's Missing?

Every e-commerce store needs the same foundational tools: a clean checkout flow, reliable payment processing, and the legal safeguards that protect both the merchant and the customer. Shopify delivers on most of these — but there's one glaring omission that has always puzzled me.

There is no built-in way for customers to acknowledge your terms and conditions at checkout.

Let that sink in. Shopify requires merchants to have a Terms of Service as part of their own platform policies, yet they don't provide a native tool — not even a simple checkbox — for customers to agree to those terms before completing a purchase.

Why Would Shopify Leave This Out?

I don't have insider knowledge here, but I do have a theory. Shopify's base subscription plans are priced competitively — almost too competitively. That's because a significant portion of their revenue comes from two other sources: their percentage cut of every transaction and their share of revenue from the Shopify App Store.

When you look at it that way, there's actually very little incentive for Shopify to include every feature a store needs out of the box. The more gaps that exist, the more merchants turn to third-party apps — and the more Shopify earns from its app ecosystem. It's a smart business model, but it can be a frustrating experience for store owners who just want things to work.

The Fix: A Simple (and Free) App

Until Shopify decides to make this a native feature, the best solution I've found is an app called RA Terms and Conditions Checkbox. It does exactly what the name suggests — adds a terms and conditions checkbox to your checkout flow.

Here's what I like about it:

  • It's free for the basic checkbox functionality — which is all most stores need.
  • If you want additional features, the premium tier is just $5/month, which is more than reasonable.
  • Setup is quick and straightforward — no developer required.

The RA Terms and Conditions Checkbox does its job well, and I'm glad it exists. But I'll say it again: this should be a standard Shopify feature, not something merchants have to go hunting for in the App Store.

The Bottom Line

Shopify is an excellent platform — one I trust enough to build my business around. But "excellent" doesn't mean "flawless." Small oversights like a missing terms and conditions checkbox might seem minor, but they add up. They cost store owners time, money, and peace of mind.

If you're running a Shopify store and finding yourself frustrated by the little things, you're not alone. And if you need help filling in the gaps — whether it's finding the right apps, customizing your checkout, or building your store from the ground up — that's exactly what I do.
